Susan Wood's Fundraiser
Cancer Research for Ros1 lung cancer
Join me and help make a difference, please give today.
This message is 7 years in the making. I am not comfortable with asking for money but I realized recently that sharing my journey can not only help me but can also help others. We have also been given a matching grant from a generous donor where every dollar donated before December 20 will be doubled.
In June of 2017 I had a lump on my side under my arm. My doctor thought it was a lipoma and nothing to worry about. I decided to have it removed anyway and it turned out to be stage 4 lung cancer. This came as a huge shock since I have never smoked. The cancer was also in my lungs, lymph nodes, and eye. The oncologist I saw recommended sending the tissue sample that I had removed for testing and it came back with a rare (1-2% of lung cancer patients) mutation called Ros-1. The good news was that a drug had been developed in the last decade to target the mutation. I began taking the drug and the cancer disappeared. 15 months later a brain MRI showed that the cancer had returned to my brain. Fortunately a new drug was in trial that crossed the blood-brain barrier so I began taking it and the cancer disappeared again. I was able to stay on that drug for 6 years with one round of radiation to a spot that developed on my spine. Last year it began growing slowly in my lung again. Fortunately a new drug is in trial that I began taking in November. My prayer is that this will last a long time or at least until a new drug comes out. That is why I am reaching out now. With your help we can fund the research necessary to develop new drugs.
We have a few projects in the works.
The ROS1 Cancer Model Project enables people who have ROS1+ cancer to donate live cancer cells to make models to accelerate research. Through our efforts since 2017, we have helped to double the number of available cell lines and those cell lines have been shared with research institutions in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
Our most recent project focuses on Real-World Data, which will develop ways to collect data from patients to get more information about their experiences with treatments and side-effects. In May 2022 we hosted a roundtable featuring an international panel of clinicians, researchers, patients, and caregivers experienced in ROS1+ cancer. Our goal is to create an international ROS1+ cancer Real-World Data project.
In addition, in 2023 we funded two $75,000 seed grants for ROS1+ cancer research projects. Our goal for 2024 is to be able to fund three $75,000 seed grants. With your help, we're so excited to move forward and help those with ROS1+ cancer improve outcomes! Visit our website to learn more about the ROS1ders patient-partnered research at The ROS1ders Global Initiative.
Just a small donation will go a long way to helping me meet my goal for The ROS1ders, Inc.
I am also planning a fundraiser at Kings Highway Tennis Club this spring if you would prefer to participate then.
Thank you for reading until the end and for your generosity!
Love, Susan
