Fund the ROS1 research that meant so much to Craig
Help us honor a powerful cancer patient advocate
Sadly, ROS1der Craig Uthe ran out of time on Thursday, Aug 12, after living with ROS1+ lung cancer for over 10 years.
He was one of the first patients to join the original targeted therapy clinical trial for ROS1+ cancer; he also helped to recruit new patients to the trial (he wanted to make sure the trial could be completed). His cancer was relatively slow growing, and his oncologists at University of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts General Hospital (including ROS1 expert clinician and researcher Dr Alice Shaw, and later, Dr Jessica Lin) guided him through several treatment options and clinical trials. He managed fairly well until a couple of years ago.
Craig was well known in the ROS1der community as a source of valuable advice and information. He was able to explain complex medical information in ways we could all understand. It wasn't uncommon for someone to tag Craig in the comments of a posted question to see if he had an insight to share with all of us. Craig also shepherded several people into the world of patient advocacy and research at ASCO, the world's largest oncology conference held annually in Chicago. The picture in the header shows Craig in the 2016 ASCO Patient Advocate lounge with fellow cancer advocates (including Janet Freeman-Daily of The ROS1ders).
We also knew Craig as a relentless pioneer in search of the next method to keep himself alive when the previous one had failed him. His courageous participation in trials and the sharing of his experiences has helped us all to think about our own next steps when the time comes.
Craig always wished other patients “Best Hopes” on their cancer journey. We cannot be sure of the outcome but we go forward with Best Hopes.
“Best Hopes” from Craig!
